Laniakea is the immense supercluster region that includes the Local Group, the Virgo Cluster, and the Great Attractor. Its boundaries are defined less by a sharp visible edge than by the way galaxies flow through space, like matter draining into the same cosmic basin.

Laniakea is not a supercluster with a sharp outline drawn around a neat visible object. It is a region defined by motion: a vast domain in which galaxies flow through space toward the same broad gravitational basin. That makes Laniakea one of the clearest examples of how cosmic structure can be mapped not just by where galaxies are, but by how they move.

What gives Laniakea its importance is that it reframed our sense of cosmic address. The Local Group, the Virgo Cluster, and the Great Attractor all sit inside this larger flow-defined environment. In other words, Laniakea describes a shared pattern of motion rather than a simple pile of matter with an obvious edge.

That is why Laniakea matters. It shows that on the largest scales, the universe is not always best understood as a set of static shapes. Sometimes the most meaningful boundaries are dynamic ones, traced by gravitational flow. Laniakea is memorable because it turns our cosmic neighborhood into a map of movement rather than just a map of positions.
