Details

The oxygen-16 nucleus is the core of almost every oxygen atom: eight protons and eight neutrons, making up about 99.76% of natural oxygen. Eight is a magic number for both protons and neutrons, so this doubly magic nucleus is unusually tightly bound. Most of it is made in massive stars, where helium fuses with carbon-12.

About

Scale of Space is a scroll-based journey through the universe, placing objects on a single logarithmic scale so you can compare size across an unbroken range.

Guides explain selected parts of that range, while focused views filter the objects by subject.
